Nick Jonah Davis

Nick Jonah Davis Thanks to PANDORA, I heard the music of Nick Jonah Davis and completely fell in love with it. I read a review about Nicks work written by Raymond Morin and I would like to share it with you. Tompkins Square has had a few homerun records in the last year… William Tyler’s spellbinding Behold The Spirit , and the Beyond Berkeley Guitar compilation would be indispensable acoustic guitar albums in just about any era, but are definite standouts in today’s fuzzy, post-everything musical landscape. The label’s winning streak quietly continues with Nick Jonah Davis’ proper debut, Of Time And Tides . Davis, though young, is not a completely new name on the underground acoustic scene. The Nottingham-based guitarist was featured on Imaginational Anthem Volume 4 , and also had a digital release called Guitar Music Volume 1 , both distributed by Tompkins Square. His playing on those records, though competent, was more or less indistinguishable from any of th...

"The Best Is Yet To Come"

Image
Some songs are sweet, some are melancholic, some are beautiful, some are sad.. some are healing and some can be disturbing...some are relaxing and some are energizing..some just put a big smile on your face and make your heart sing along.. I find this particular song ABSOLUTELY JUICY - the lyrics drip with deliciousness. Enjoy it! Click the link to listen to the song http://tinysong.com/ksNL "The Best Is Yet To Come" Out of the tree of life, I just picked me a plum You came along and everything started to hum Still its a real good bet, the best is yet to come The best is yet to come, and baby wont it be fine You think you've seen the sun, but you aint seen it shine Wait till the warm-up's underway Wait till our lips have met Wait till you see that sunshine day You aint seen nothin yet The best is yet to come, and baby wont it be fine The best is yet to come, come the day your mine The best is yet to come Come the day your mine Oh come the day your mine I'm gonna t...

Paul McCartney on Céu

Image

Image
This morning I woke up with LA VIE EN ROSE in my head. LA VIE EN ROSE means something like, "Life in Rosy Hues". The music for the song was written in or before 1946 by is Louis Gugliemi (aka Louiguy) and the lyrics were composed by Édith Piaf herself, the French songstress who made it famous. There has been at least one English version of the lyrics, by Mack David, but it is a rewrite along vaguely similar lines rather than a translation. I decided to publish the original lyrics in French and the closest translation to the original lyrics, in english. Also published here are the links to my favorite versions of the song, sang by Piaf, Louis Armstrong and Grace Jones. http://youtu.be/vQZJB6WFAn0 http://youtu.be/8IJzYAda1wA http://youtu.be/kYkVtz6ozJE (if links don't work, copy and paste them into your browser) LA VIE EN ROSE (French Lyrics) Des yeux qui font baisser les miens, Un rire qui se perd sur sa bouche— Voilà le portrait sans retouche De l’homme auquel j’app...

Voicing the joys from Brazil, Ceu brings distinct sounds of São Paulo to New York

Image
http://soc.li/ON1lMFP From the Daily News Stride down the grittier blocks of Rua Augusta in São Paulo, Brazil , and you'll spy prostitutes, crack addicts, street fights and, it just so happens, one of the most vibrant live music scenes in the world. Like some Southern Hemisphere corollary to New York's East Village of the '70s, São Paulo has, over the last few years, incubated a scene that has spawned exciting exports like Curumin, CSS, Telepathique, Sonantes — and a solo singer who also fronts that last band: Ceu (pronounced cell). Not that these acts sound at all like vintage New York punk — or even each other. "The scene here isn't a movement that has ideologies," Ceu says. "It's just that we have so many bands writing their own songs and so many beautiful singers down here." Ceu's own sound provides an ideal bridge between expected Brazilian styles — the airy and sensual lilts common to bossa nova — and a vast palette of m...

Fats Waller - Ain't Misbehavin'

Image
Not only was Fats Waller one of the greatest pianists jazz has ever known, he was also one of its most exuberantly funny entertainers -- and as so often happens, one facet tends to obscure the other. His extraordinarily light and flexible touch belied his ample physical girth; he could swing as hard as any pianist alive or dead in his classic James P. Johnson - derived stride manner, with a powerful left hand delivering the octaves and tenths in a tireless, rapid, seamless stream. Waller also pioneered the use of the pipe organ and Hammond organ in jazz -- he called the pipe organ the "God box" -- adapting his irresistible sense of swing to the pedals and a staccato right hand while making imaginative changes of the registration. As a composer and improviser, his melodic invention rarely flagged, and he contributed fistfuls of joyous yet paradoxically winsome songs like "Honeysuckle Rose," "Ain't Misbehavin,'" "Keepin' Out of...

In a Sentimental Mood and why I LOVE NEW YORK!

http://vimeo.com/21660130 (click the link to watch Les Goodson playing In a Sentimental Mood. If link doesn't work, copy and paste the link onto your browser) On this particular evening, I was on my way home, tired and cold, and was about to take a taxi when I decided to quit being a sissy and take the train. Boy I am glad I did! In the subway station I met Les Goodson, the saxophone player that is playing in this video. His music put a big smile on my face and filled my heart with joy. I shot this little movie using my beloved iPhone. It amazes me that a musician of this caliber has to play in a subway station in order to make a couple of bucks. But in a selfish way, I am glad they do. This was a treat. Les Goodson band plays at Paris Blues, every Wednesday, from 8pm-12am PARIS BLUES 2021 Adam Clayton Power Jr Blvd at 121st Street 212-222-9878
