Ferdinand Magellan is credited with bringing them to Africa and Asia, where they have long since been incorporated into cuisine and medicine. Here are six health benefits of jalapenos. WATCH THAT (FARMED) SALMON!!!

Image
David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany and publisher of a major study in the journal Science on contamination in fish, gives us the scoop: The problem:  Nature didn't intend for salmon to be crammed into pens and fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers. As a result, farmed salmon is lower in vitamin D and higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides such as dioxin and DDT. According to Carpenter, the most contaminated fish come from Northern Europe, which can be found on American menus. "You could eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer," says Carpenter, whose 2004 fish contamination study got broad media attention. "It's that bad." Preliminary science has also linked DDT to diabetes and obesity, but some nutritionists believe the benefits of omega-3s outweigh the risks....

Por dentro do cérebro - Dr Paulo Niemeyer Filho / Neurocirurgião

Image
Isto comprova qu...

8 Reasons to Practice Headstand (Salamba Shirshasana)

Image
1. Increases Stamina and Strength and Promotes Good Posture Headstand builds strength in the neck and shoulders as well as the abdominals and upper spine. 2. Improves Cardiovascular Functioning Inversions reduce strain on the heart which normally works against gravity. While in headstand de-oxygenated blood is able to flow more easily from the extremities to the heart. 3. Strengthens and Massages the Lungs Due to gravity, the lower parts of the lungs receive more fluids which cause the tissue in the lower lungs to be more condensed. As a result, when we inhale air moves more freely to the upper part of the lungs. When we invert, blood moves to the upper part of the lungs facilitating a more efficient oxygen-blood exchange. Also, the weight of the internal organs massages the lungs increasing vital capacity as the lungs learn to breathe against the added weight. 4. Stimulates the Digestive System Headstand increases digestive fire boosting ene...

Getting Rid of that ridiculous Beer Belly

Image
A wise man once said, “Drinking beer doesn’t make you fat; it makes you lean… against bars, tables, chairs and poles.” Turns out the guy was half right. The college lifestyle of all-you-can eat dining halls, all night study sessions and partying Thursday to Sunday can quickly catch up to your waist line. For proof, check out 80 Epic Beer Bellies [PICS] . If you’ve recently discovered your gut and sides hanging over your pants like a muffin top, it might be time to cut back on the brewskis. You may not want to hear it, but in addition to eating healthy and regularly exercising, you have to stop drinking if you want to lose that beer gut. Alcohol  is nothing but empty calories, and when you drink, your body uses the calories from the alcohol for energy instead of fat. Any calories from alcohol that are not used for energy are stored as fat. This is how you gain weight from drinking. Quitting the bottle to lose weight is especially hard to do when you consider ...

Get up and do a yoga session." Well, we can't all do a headstand, so If you're feeling less than stellar today after a little too much beer or bubbly last night, here are four natural hangover helpers so you can get moving on a new you in the new year: Coconut water is loaded with potassium--it actually contains 15 times more potassium than a sports drink or twice as much as a banana, so it makes for a great hangover fixer. Yoga has a number of health benefits, and now you can count hangover fixer as yet another. Yoga twists (a seated twist will do) in particular can relieve head and stomach aches by promoting detoxification deep within your body. Water . Lots of water. IMPORTANTE - Perigos do Benzeno!

Image

Chad Dennis - Yogis, check this out!

Image
There is nothing like an amazing yoga practice.  I had a class with Chad today that was so absolutely perfect, inspiring, enriching and enlightening that I had to mention this incredible teacher's gift on my blog. It is no wonder that he has been hired to tour with Maroon 5 for years and when he is not able to be with the band he teaches them via skype!  (Adam Levine can not live without Chad's class!) Chad Dennis has been practicing yoga for over 20 years and teaching for 15. He has completed many teacher trainings and has obtained numerous certifications including OM, Yoga Works, Anusara, Bhava, Bikram, TRX and Revolution In Motion to name just a few. Over the last 20 years Chad studied directly under such esteemed teachers as John Friend, Dr. Robert Svaboda, Gulan Mirashi, David Life, Eddie Stern, Rodney Yee, Bruce Holmes (Feldenkrais), S.N. STROKES

Image
During a BBQ a friend of a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) and had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes. They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening. Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - at 6:00pm, Ingrid passed away. She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ - had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. It only takes a minute to read this-     A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally.  He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting help to...

Today I talked to a bunch of kiwis - by Ana Cissa Pinto

Image
Today I talked to a bunch of kiwis. No no, I am not talking about New Zealanders. I am talking about the actual fruit. I went into a store and saw a big pile of good-looking kiwis. I swear the kiwis lured me towards them, and I decided to pick one. I looked at the pile and I asked: “Which one of you is the sweetest of all?” And all the little kiwis directed me to this specific hairy chubby green kiwi in the middle of the pile. Now, here’s the thing, either I am losing my mind and talking to fruit or I am actually in tune with the universe. I say that because, rewinding a bit on my story, an hour or so before my kiwi encounter, I was taking a yoga class and had to stop my practice a few times due to severe muscle cramps on my legs. Just out of curiosity, once I got home and was ready to have my kiwi, I googled about kiwi’s properties. To my surprise, the first phrase I read was: “Kiwis are one of the best things for the prevention of Hypokalemia .” Hypokalemia is a me...

Running nose

Image
Today I feel like my head is a big box of snot. One of those boxes, like the cheesy wine boxes we can buy nowadays, you know? The ones that have a little faucet? Well, my snot head box's faucet is definitely busted because it won't stop dripping. I think I blew my nose about seventeen hundred times today and now I look like Rudolph the reindeer. Other than my stuffy penthouse and the broken faucet I feel alright though. It got me thinking, what exactly is the function of a "runny nose"? What kind of process is that, and why do we have to go through so many boxes of kleenex??? Can we just get it over with and get rid of the m*@##rf*#@ing snot in one giant, mind boggling BLOW? Argh!!! So I went in search of the scientific (or would that classify it as biological?) explanation for the snot spring that gets activated, every time we have a cold: *What is a Runny Nose? A runny nose, also known as rhinorrhea, is usually the first sign of a cold or flu, although you might als...

Turning Upside Down

Image
Inspired by my spring 'cleansing' (the master cleanse) I decided to add a headstand to my daily tibetan rites practice (http://t.co/CkDUiug) . I am pretty good at "listening" to my body...and I feel like my body was asking for a good inversion pose. It feels so good to do this particular asana after the 5 tibetan exercises, that I decided to look into all the benefits of the headstand and other inversions. Here is what I found: Turning Upside Down: the Benefits of Headstand and Shoulder Stand A General Look at Inversions Inverted poses are an extremely important group of asanas. Inverted asanas reverse the action of gravity on the body; instead of everything being pulled towards the feet, the orientation shifts towards the head. Similarly, on the emotional and psychic levels, inverted asanas turn everything upside down, throwing a new light on old patterns of behavior and being. Generally, these practices improve health, reduce anxiety and stress and increase self-con...
