The Paraty House by Marcio Kogan - SUBLIME

Image
One of my all time favorite houses in the world: The Paraty House by Marcio Kogan Architects Paraty House’s two reinforced concrete boxes, sit atop each other, connected on the mountainside of one of the islands of the colonial city of Paraty and Angra dos Reis (between São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro), like two modern prisms between the large colossal stones of the Brazilian coast. The building projects outward from the mountain, almost onto the beach, in an 8m cantilever. The house finds balance in the topography of the land, creating an extensive open doorway and living space in the practically untouched nature. Paraty House features a furniture collection showcasing 20thcentury design, including works by many well-known artists. The residents arrive by boat. After stepping out onto the sand a metallic bridge positioned over a crystal-lined reflecting pool leads to a set of stairs connecting to the lower volume. This volume contains the living room...

Desnuda

Image
Today I am going to talk about Desnuda. Desnuda is a tiny Wine Bar and Cevicheria tucked away in my neighborhood; only visible to the real New Yorkers. I love this hidden gem! I love the ambient, with it's dim lights and the super cool fans on the walls. As you get there they will serve you with a basket with free truffle popcorn as a welcome treat while you check out the simple and yet very special menu of delicious ceviches. Peter, the co-owner, always with a big smile on his face, and the executive chef, Christian, will be glad to suggest a wine from their list of interesting, and rather unusual wines. They serve great wines from Patagonia, Uruguay, Spain and Chile. Armed with a sushi-bar-style cooler of fish, knifes, a cutting board, spices, a blowtorch, and a little burner, the two of them command the "kitchen". Well, there is no kitchen. They prepare everything behind the counter and you get to watch the action. I would try the salmon with aji amarillo chile, red...

My favorite SPOT

Image
The restaurant Spot opened in 1994, and is located in a square of illuminated fountains. The restaurant itself is surrounded by skyscrapers, not surprising as it‘s only half a block from Avenida Paulista. The menu is creative, and brings influences from many areas. Some dishes, due to popularity, have been on the menu since the restaurant opened. The menu consists mostly of grilled meat, chicken and fish, but also features pasta dishes as well as daily specials. Rua Min. Rocha Azevedo, 72. Avenida Paulista. Tel. 283 0946. http://www.restaurantespot.com.br Open Weekdays 12pm-3pm, 8pm-1am; Weekends 1pm-4:30pm, 8pm-1am source of info: gringoes.com

The Real Threat to America

Image
Interesting article by Roger Cohen (NYT) The Real Threat to America By ROGER COHEN LONDON — The full-body scanners and intrusive pat-downs that are fast becoming the norm at U.S. airports — just in time for Thanksgiving! — do at least provide the answer to what should be done with Osama bin Laden if he’s ever captured: Rotate him in perpetuity through this security hell, “groin checks” and all. He’ll crumple fast and wonder that 19 young guys in four planes could so warp the nervous system of the world’s most powerful nation that it has empowered zealous bureaucrats to trample on the liberties for which Americans give thanks this week. In his stupor, arms raised as his body gets “imaged,” arms outstretched through “enhanced” patting, bin Laden might also wonder at just how stupid it is to assemble huge crowds at the Transportation Security Administration’s airport checkpoints, as if hundreds of people on planes were the only hundreds of peop...
