a dream come true: A TIRAMISU BAR!

Image
My favorite dessert now in a superstore! Introducing Dolce Vizio , a West Village sweetshop shrine that holds within its walls enough espresso-soaked ladyfingers to feed a small army, opening Saturday. Make no mistake: what you’re dealing with here is quite literally the most concentrated collection of tiramisu available anywhere outside of Milan. You see, all this sliver of a storefront does is bake, beat and fill little clear bowls with alternating layers of soft biscuits, mascarpone cheese and sifted cocoa powder. The recipes: straight from the Old Country. The flavors: Nutella, limoncello, orange espresso or anything else they might have lying around the kitchen. Now that you have direct access to the mother lode of made-daily tiramisu, it’s important that you exercise some measure of restraint. Ideally, you’ll want to limit reps at this red, white and wood Italian café to those precious mid-date interludes that require something with a little more panache than frozen...

The videos playing in the elevators at the Standard Hotel - NYC

Image
Guests at the Standard Hotel, are treated to an awesome eye candy: "Civilization," a depiction of heaven, hell, and purgatory created by video artist Marco Brambilla. The video artist compiled hundreds of movie clips into one stunning piece inspired by Dante's Inferno. The piece runs as one enormous video collage. As the elevator rises, the sequence, running from an overhead projector, ascends to heaven. As the elevator descends, the video runs in reverse, ending in hell. Brambilla created the piece by assembling the movie clips, which he photoshopped together. He then took these to a digital animation house which combined all the clips, so that each one runs in a loop as part of one single video collage. I recommend a happy hour drink at the Boom Boom Room (the bar at the top of the Standard Hotel) even if just for the elevator ride! (Well, you will enjoy the view from up there as well and that is a promise!) Watch the video by clicking the link. http://vimeo.com/5...

The Rhino on the Bottle

Image
Early on this evening, I was in a special mood...you know when EVERYTHING you do seems to come out absolutely perfect? Despite the rain, I had a really nice and productive day that ended up with an amazing massage (@ Acqua Spa with Tommy - http://www.acquabeautybar.com) After my massage I went shopping for some fish & veggies for dinner (right next door actually @ good'ol'no lines'Garden of Eden - who needs Wholefoods!?) and stopped by USQ Wines (http://www.unionsquarewines.com/) where I grabbed a bottle of 2007 Ca'DiPian - Barbera D'asti. Even though I was having fish I decided to stick to a bold wine. I can't help it...I am a bold wine girl. And my wine drinking choices usually go with what the weather is like and also my state of mind more so than the food I am eating it with. Sue me. Anyway...so the weather was truly awful. As my friend Sofia says, we had monsoonic style rain. That is the kind of weather that when you are out, walking around, all you can...

In a Sentimental Mood and why I LOVE NEW YORK!

Image
http://vimeo.com/21660130 (click the link to watch Les Goodson playing In a Sentimental Mood. If link doesn't work, copy and paste the link onto your browser) On this particular evening, I was on my way home, tired and cold, and was about to take a taxi when I decided to quit being a sissy and take the train. Boy I am glad I did! In the subway station I met Les Goodson, the saxophone player that is playing in this video. His music put a big smile on my face and filled my heart with joy. I shot this little movie using my beloved iPhone. It amazes me that a musician of this caliber has to play in a subway station in order to make a couple of bucks. But in a selfish way, I am glad they do. This was a treat. Les Goodson band plays at Paris Blues, every Wednesday, from 8pm-12am PARIS BLUES 2021 Adam Clayton Power Jr Blvd at 121st Street 212-222-9878

Desnuda

Image
Today I am going to talk about Desnuda. Desnuda is a tiny Wine Bar and Cevicheria tucked away in my neighborhood; only visible to the real New Yorkers. I love this hidden gem! I love the ambient, with it's dim lights and the super cool fans on the walls. As you get there they will serve you with a basket with free truffle popcorn as a welcome treat while you check out the simple and yet very special menu of delicious ceviches. Peter, the co-owner, always with a big smile on his face, and the executive chef, Christian, will be glad to suggest a wine from their list of interesting, and rather unusual wines. They serve great wines from Patagonia, Uruguay, Spain and Chile. Armed with a sushi-bar-style cooler of fish, knifes, a cutting board, spices, a blowtorch, and a little burner, the two of them command the "kitchen". Well, there is no kitchen. They prepare everything behind the counter and you get to watch the action. I would try the salmon with aji amarillo chile, red...

YELO - URBAN SPA - tip NYC

Image
A friend of mine told me about this place in NYC and I am dying to try it. It sounds great! Check it out: "YeloSpa was created and designed to be a sanctuary to help urbanites deal with the pressures of modern life through a unique combination of spa and wellness treatments. Upon arrival you are immediately wrapped in a warm and peaceful color scheme inspired by the robes and sash of Tibetan Monks. Sip artisanal tea from a floating Lantern and refresh with a scented hot towel as you embark on your Yelo journey. Your session takes place in a cocoon-like treatment room called the YeloCab where you can completely customize your aromatherapy, sound and lighting and enjoy a mini-vacation in the heart of New York City. Whether experiencing a Yelo Reflexology or Nap session in our zero gravity Yelo Chair or rejuvenating your mind and body with a Swedish Massage and Glow Facial, you will emerge feeling revived, refreshed and balanced." As soon as I try it I will let you ...

Reveillon em New York

Image
Um amigo querido que está vindo passar o Reveillon em New York, me pediu umas dicas de onde ir comemorar a virada. Resolvi então compartilhar estas dicas aqui no blog.

BLUE HILL

Image
Again, I went to one of my favorite restaurants in NY, though this time, just to seat at the bar and have a night cap with a friend. BLUE HILL is THE place I want to go. Always. Anytime. I fell like if I had a restaurant it would probably be pretty much like Blue Hill. They are so chic, and understated at the same time. The ambient is very inviting, they play Coltrane Ballads, Bill Evans Blue and Green, and the likes. The small, below ground dining room has the feeling of an exclusive, guest only club, yet Blue Hill may be the best low-profile restaurant in town. Backlit banquettes and warmly illuminated brick walls with a cozy bar at the entrance, Blue Hill invites you in and you just want to stay, until they close! Chef Daniel Barber “wows” his well-heeled clients (including the Obamas) with inspired New American cooking based on extremely fresh seasonal ingredient. The food is, overall, simply prepared and everything tastes like it would in a farm. Blue Hill's menu showcases loc...

My new FAVORITE Bar-Lounge

Image
I finally found the perfect lounge bar. 675 Bar is a “no-frills” subterranean “hideaway” divided into raw-brick “alcoves” equipped with “foosball, board games, Jenga, Pacman and a pool table”. You can choose to play games or if you just want to chill, have a drink, and actually talk to a friend and hear what they are saying, this place is for you. I love the decor of 675. It's very cozy, inviting, homy and yet sophisticated. They serve awesome drinks, two of my favorites being: SOMMERWIND - Riesling, Lychee, Cucumber - and OLD SAO PAULO - Sagatiba Cachaça, Cointreau, Orzata, Passion Fruit Puree. They also serve yummy small plates like quesadillas, crispy calamari, sliders and tasty empanadas. If you are planning on going, try to get there before 9pm. By 11:30pm the place gets pretty crowded and there might be a line to get in. I am definitely going back to 675, and I will make sure to get there early enough to secure one of the awesome candle lit alcoves. Très romantique & tr...

Fred's

Image
When visiting NY, a lot of tourists end up at the 5th Avenue Apple store, right next to Central Park and across the street from the Plaza Hotel. While this is a lovely area to visit, it lacks good restaurants near by. You would have to walk several blocks until you find a good place for lunch, happy hour or dinner. I would like to suggest a place that I just happen to love, and it's right there, in the area. You would not just run into it. It is not out on the streets. This restaurant is a hidden jewel! I'm talking about a restaurant called Fred's. Fred's is located on the top floor of Barney's NY (if you haven't been to Barneys - it's a great dept store. My favorite actually) I love seating at the bar at Fred's, ordering a delicious Lobster Bisque, or an Insalada Caprese. And if it's a hot summer day, and I have been walking and or shopping a lot, and need a serious brake, I order a nice and cold glass of Sauvignon Blanc to go with it. The ambient ...
