Line from MOONSTRUCK

A friend sent me this line from MOONSTRUCK that is just genius, though I am a sucker and I do believe that without love we are all niente. Still I wanted to share it. It's brilliant.

"Love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die. The storybooks are bullshit."

Ronny Cammareri (played by Nicolas Cage)

  1. This is a Bullshit quote for people who can't handle rejection and compensate by being in eternal denial that they are in fact with the wrong person. Story books are bullshit only to the extent we want to interpret them, but best stories have been inspired and moved by very true and deep feelings, otherwise there would be no place for art and music. True love moves people to greater things, passive love is like a slow and tortured death, the comfort of such found in every day that it's sustained, when in fact it needs to be let go. Agreed, Perfection doesn't exist, but nor does half ass love.

  2. Interesting! Half ass love? Amazing comment. Let's see now something about acrimony, bitterness, acerbity, jaundice, lack of sense of humour. Must be even more interesting.

  3. Hey Anonymous #1: Have you ever watched the movie Moonstruck? If not, watch it. When you see this movie you will understand the context of that phrase. It´s a positive thing dude (or dudette)! Cheer up!

  4. Yeah Anonymous #1...
The quote is cool because it's coming out of the mouth of a guy that is totally in love! Don't you get it? That's what makes it so awesome! Did you see the movie?

  5. Mye ur right, it's out of context and it is a positive thing. It's actually a funny quote, but it does ''read'' negatively. it's actually quite funny... here's a bit more....

Loretta, I love you. Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess. We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and *die*. The storybooks are *bullshit*. Now I want you to come upstairs with me and *get* in my bed!

PS Anon 2 - overreacting.... Anon 1 - half ass love - awesome! funny

  6. I think it's an awesome phrase because he is saying the opposite of what he is feeling!!!

  7. Nicholas Cage´s character is clearly talking out of passion. I don´t think it has anything to do with rejection or a loveless relationship. On the contrary it is a funny, desperate, touching and passioned scene, one of the best in the movie.

  8. I can't figure out the connection between what Nicholas Cage's character said and the half ass love comment...

  9. Oh yeah baby...he is totally in love. Such cool scene.

  10. To be open to love is to be vulnerable. Ronny knows the risk and has been burned before, but he still wants it. He hasn't given up, he's trying to be real this time.

  11. Anonymous 1 here:
YOU ARE ALL RIGHT, MY APOLOGIES - it is taken out of context. I just watched the film - but tells you something about taking things out of context too, about the written word and delivery.... The character is thinking the opposite of what he says, therefore putting this in context would make wayyyy more sense. Once I read "I love you Loretta" and "get in my bed", it was much clearer than reading the posted quote. Sorry all... but was fun to fire up the crowd!

  12. I just assumed EVERYONE's seen that flick. It's just too good not to! :) Don't you just LOVE it??

I used to live 2 blocks from where that movie was shot, at the time it was shot. Brooklyn Heights, promenade, LOVE.....

PS:I also LOVE how many comments we got on this post! Yay to LOVE!!!

  13. If you never watched MOONSTRUCK..do it. NOW!

  14. I would say that love is to redeem us and then show what can be perfect. I think it happens only with the right person. Then the rest can become a mess...

  16. Mauricio - funny quote - again - why do people put things out of context. The collector??? This quote has less to do with passionate love, more to do with book collecting, and our personality.... the passion that W. Benjamin is talking about is not necessarily towards another person, although it could be applied to the first part of the quote... nice try but superficial.

  17. I love this line.
I live across the street from where they filmed this movie. There really are Cammareri Bros. who had the bakery. Instead of fighting over 1 woman, though, they married 2 sisters.
